Gain Energy After 50

in Healthcare, Uncategorized

Gain Energy Even After 50?

Where you are is a good starting point.
Even if you are now just getting into the mindset of taking steps to increase energy and feel better, it’s still a perfect place to start. Do you have friends who are heavily active already? Don’t compare yourself to them, but instead, ask for their guidance to help give you a jump start. And DON’T do too much too soon, or you’ll be taking steps backward instead of forward. Remember, it’s not a competition and starting initially with just one or two simple changes, you’ll feel the increase in energy. It will then be up to you (and your doctor) how far you want to go.

One change at a time.
Are you a late-night eater? Start with that as a focus where you don’t eat anything after 8 pm. And, reduce your portion size. Your body will get used to it and you’ll feel better. By taking small actions, one at a time, it won’t be such a drastic change and you’ll work your way up to other changes to improve your physical and mental health.

These shoes are made for walking.
Getting hungry or simply bored? Try taking a five-minute walk. Stretch your legs, enjoy the weather and take in the sights of your neighborhood by walking around the block. Or, invite some friends to meet you at the park and turn it into a group routine. If it’s hot outside, meet at the mall, walk around the common areas, and you’ll see a bunch of other friendly faces doing the same thing. You’ll share stories about what’s going on in your lives, while getting the movement your body needs. It’s amazing how a short walk can boost your spirits and reduce the sound of that grumbling tummy.

Water is the miracle drink.
It’s amazing how many people still do not drink enough water. It’s especially important as we age, that we drink enough of this healthy pick-me-up. When we’re not fully hydrated, our metabolism slows down which has many other effects on your body. Make sure you bring a large bottle of water when you exercise as it’s the most efficient nutrient to help keep your muscles moving. Lacking energy during the day? Grab a glass of water to replenish those reserves.

Strength training keeps you strong.
Exercise is one of the best ways to boost energy levels, especially if you’re over the age of 50. Lifting weights or some sort of resistance exercise is one of the best ways to strengthen your body, and mind. Additionally, when we take these steps now to being stronger, it affects our daily lives with even the simplest of tasks, like getting up out of a chair or playing with our grandkids.

Are you or a loved one ready to take some of the above steps but need guidance? Our nurses at GenCare Resources can help with that. It may be as simple as having a companion to walk with to make sure you’re safe while having someone to talk to, or overseeing that group walk at your favorite mall.

Is It Time to Partner with a Healthcare Staffing Agency

in Healthcare, Uncategorized

Is It Time to Partner With a Healthcare Staffing Agency?

Do you feel that the methods you use to staff your medical facility are up to par? We’ve identified some of the signs that show your facility is understaffed. This could also mean that there are many things that have fallen between the cracks and that you do not realize there is even a problem. This can be dangerous considering we’re dealing with patient care. Here are some subtle signs that it might be time to team up with a medical staffing agency.

Your Staff is Showing Signs of Being Burnt Out
When a healthcare facility is understaffed, it doesn’t mean you can simply put off some of the work until your back to full capacity. Depending on the type of facility, your workload could change daily based on the need, which most times is completely out of your control. In fact, ignoring these signs could not only lead to lost productivity, but even more serious, devastating accidents. If your team members are working non-stop without the proper amount of downtime, you need to do something about it now. A staffing agency is the perfect solution for meeting short-term needs as their nurses are accustomed to working flexible schedules, or joining you full-time if that’s what you need. You are able to choose the type of help that best fits your ever-changing needs:

  • Temporary
  • Part-time
  • Permanent Hires

Overtime is Out of Control
Pay attention to payroll and time clocks. This is one of the ways you can catch this challenge early, BEFORE your team gets burnt out. Staffing shortages happen but if you catch it early, you have a great chance of retaining your team, while augmenting with part-time help while you stabilize so that you can think clearly. Your long-term employees will be up to the challenge for a short time, but don’t take advantage as good medical team members are tough to find.

Scheduling Has Become a Full Time Job
You have a number of tasks on your plate and scheduling shouldn’t be the one that’s filling it up. It’s a significant responsibility, but if it’s turning into a full-time role, there’s something wrong. Do you find that you’re juggling time-off requests, last-minute call-ins, or constantly approving overtime? If so, this is a clear indication that your staffing needs are critical.

When you work closely with a good staffing firm, your time will be freed up to focus, which will make you a more productive and effective leader.

Why the Right Footwear Can be a Home Health Nurse’s Best Friend

in Uncategorized

Why the Right Footwear Can be a Home Health Nurse’s Best Friend

Nurses in hospitals work multiple hours on long shifts over a three- or four-day period, and sometimes more than that. They have learned that having the right footwear can make the difference between being tired with aching feet, or gliding through shifts with comfortable feet. It is no less important for a home health nurse or health aide to have the right shoes. Many home healthcare nurses work hours that are just as long as a nurse at a medical facility. Twelve-hour days are not unusual for a home healthcare nurse with numerous patients; they are on their feet the entire time, except when they are traveling from location to location. If the shoes worn by nurses had an equivalent in cars, they would have over one hundred thousand miles on them. You wouldn’t go that far on the same pair of old tires. Here are some tips about footwear in nursing and how they can benefit you.

Don’t Go Formal

While looking you best is admirable, but when it comes to the shoes, a home health nurse wears it can be trouble. If you have been wearing high heels as you go from home to home, you are putting your feet through undue strain. All that pressure on the ball of your foot from a high heel will cause problems with the joints in the ball of your foot. An excruciating condition known as metatarsalgia is caused by pressure on the ball of your foot. Another common problem from wearing heels is plantar fasciitis. This condition causes chronic soreness in the arch of your foot, so the best policy is no heels as you nurse. Male nurses should also avoid dress shoes because the heel can cause similar issues, just to a lesser extent.

A Nurse is an Athlete

With all the walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, and other physical activities a nurse does on a daily basis is akin to being an athlete. Why then, if nursing is an athletic activity, would you not wear athletic shoes? Shoes such as running shoes or cross trainers are ideal for a nurse. Some nurses opt for clogs or Crocs, while comfortable and padded, each shoe can be slipped out of easily by design; which means you can accidentally slip out of them while helping a patient from their bed to a wheelchair or while helping a patient with physical therapy. Lace up running shoes, and cross trainers are both comfortable and provide the needed security to keep a mishap from occurring.
Try on your athletic shoes before purchasing them, don’t order them over the internet. You will want to get a feel for how the shoe supports or doesn’t support the different parts of your foot.

Replace Your Shoes on a Regular Basis

Our tire analogy earlier in this post is relevant here, tires have a certain amount of miles they can last and so to sneakers. There is no specific amount of steps that wear out a shoe, but the rule of thumb when it comes to being on your feet as a home health nurse is to change them out every six months. If your shoes are too flexible (if the toe bends easily towards the heal while laced) it may be time for them to go before six months. If your shoes still feel good after six months, you can slowly phase them out by buying a second pair of shoes and rotating the days you wear them. This practice may extend your shoes past six months, and you won’t be caught flat-footed (pardon the pun) when they finally wear out.

Final Thoughts

In addition to the right footwear, your weight can have a significant impact on the condition of your feet. If you are overweight, losing a few pounds can help relieve some of your foot pain. If your feet are still in pain after you switch shoes due to your old ones, try soaking them in Epson salts. Try soaking them for 15 to 20 minutes. The salts will draw out excess fluid and lactic acid that is irritating your feet.
With a little attention paid to your shoes, your home health nursing workday can become a lot less difficult to endure.

The Importance of a Home Healthcare Nurse for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Patients

in Uncategorized

The Importance of a Home Health Care Nurse for TBI

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) always happens without warning. It usually occurs in things like car accidents or slipping in the shower and striking the wall. In many cases, a person who suffers a traumatic brain injury recovers fully or enough to be able to function on their own. Sadly, in some cases of traumatic brain injury patients never regain the ability that was lost, and their symptoms deteriorate with time. Everyday activities like tying shoelaces, bathing, even walking can become arduous tasks. The suddenness of a TBI does not give patients or their loved ones time to adjust to the change of life, it shocks them and thrust forward a whole host of new responsibilities. A husband or wife may be forced to quit their job or find one with fewer hours in order to care for their spouse.

Parents who had reached retirement age may find themselves caring for an adult child who has been moved back into their home. Maybe the TBI patient is being placed in a facility that can provide care because, despite your best efforts, you can’t do it alone. In scenarios such as these, TBI is cruel to both the sufferer and family. With that in mind, the importance of a home healthcare nurse to a TBI patient and their loved ones is vital. Let’s take a look at what TBI is and some ways a home healthcare nurse can alleviate some of the burdens from a family dealing with it.

What is TBI?

TBI occurs when something such as a blow to the head from an object, striking the head against a hard object, or a jarring of the brain from being shook in something like a car crash, an object penetrating the brain such as a bullet or an explosion close enough to affect the brain; all of these can cause structural damage. Structural damage is done to the brain which causes effects as mild as headaches to severe conditions such as dementia and loss of mobility.

How can a Home Healthcare Nurse Help Patients with TBI and Their Families?

If a TBI sufferer needs the assistance of a home healthcare nurse if they have any of the following:

  • A loss of motor skills
  • Severely Impaired cognitive function
  • Incontinence
  • Severely impaired respiratory function
  • The inability to feed themselves

In these scenarios the TBI sufferers are disabled to the level where self-care is no longer an option, a home health nurse can be invaluable. Taking vital signs and monitoring the patient are basic, but crucial functions of what a home healthcare nurse can do for patients and their families. They can help patients in daily minor physical therapy like standing up, or movement of arms and legs. In addition, a home healthcare nurse can see potential problems like slip and fall hazards and can recommend some ways to make the patients home safer. A home healthcare nurse has the training to act as the first line of defense. They will recognize when a TBI patient’s symptoms are worsening and will advise the patient’s loved ones to take them to their physician or to the hospital. While not specifically what a home health care nurse does, they may help out with a patient’s day to day needs. If a family needs assistance with things like bathing a TBI patient, feeding them, getting them in and out of bed, or any other basic need; these needs would fall under the duties of a home health aide. Home health aides can work hand in hand with a home health nurse to ensure that the TBI patient receives the best care possible.

So, if you have a loved one who suffers from TBI and you feel that the burden has become too much for you, a home healthcare nurse can lighten some of the stress of care from you and your family.

Nurse Self-Care Should be a Priority

Nurse Self-Care Should be a Priority

Nurses receive joy when they care for others, but unfortunately, many do not take care of themselves. There is no guilt in taking the time you need to make sure you take a “time out” for yourself.

To follow are some steps that will help you to be the best you can be so that you can take the best care of others.

What types of activities do you engage in regularly that contribute to your well-being and health? Do you actively care for your emotional life?

Diagnose a self-care deficit:

Take the time to write down all the areas you can improve by evaluating what you don’t do but know you should. Do you take regular vacations or a time-out to walk on the beach? How about watching what you eat? You’re a nurse, so you know what is right & wrong when it comes to nutrition.

Plan a course of action:

If you are always worried or stressed, getting into counseling or psychotherapy may be in order. Also, if you are eating whatever you can lay your hands on, take steps to get back on track by following what you know are healthy habits.

Make it happen:

Take all of the information you collected in the above two steps and draft an actual plan to improve your overall well-being. This could start with a 3-day vacation to get you started, but make sure you shut down and clear your head. Don’t spend all your time on social media where it doesn’t allow your brain to rest and take in all the beautiful things going on around you.

Evaluate your accomplishments:

This is where you look back and see if the actions you took to “get back to yourself” are working. If you set your goals too big, it won’t happen. Baby steps make it easier, and then you can graduate to more lofty goals. Be flexible with yourself and allow yourself to learn and experiment as you go.

Whether you need exercise, counseling, a vacation, or time to read magazines in the bathtub, it’s your responsibility to make it happen. Nursing is a demanding profession, and we want to make sure you are at the top of your own list.

Do You Have Difficult Patients?

Nursing is a rewarding career, however, it can also mean that you will need to work with people who may be difficult. The key to being a successful nurse is to understand that anger, fear, being overly demanding, among others, may be a result of medications or diseases that can cause confusion or agitation.

There are strategies to help you manage these unpleasant or uncooperative patients while continuing to provide the much-needed care and attention they need.

Here are what the experts say to do with certain patients and situations:

First, determine, is it them or you?
Make sure it isn’t something that you’re dealing with in your own life that is causing you to interpret their behavior in a negative way.

Acknowledge the situation
Sometimes, you just have to speak out loud about the tension. Say something like “I feel like we are getting off on the wrong foot.” This opens the door for you to talk about it and give them the opportunity to fully realize you’re there to help.

Take yourself out of the situation for a moment
Sometimes a quick walk around the block or taking a moment to read a book can help you clear your head.

Look at it from the patient’s point-of-view
Sometimes they may simply be scared about their health or recent diagnosis that can be clouding their perception of what’s going on.

Hear them out
Sometimes they just need to talk to someone, and the power of listening can really help both them and you. Be open and patient so that they know you really care and there to help.

Be empathetic
If they begin to cry, hand them a tissue. This goes a long way to show you are really trying to understand their situation.

Boundaries are important
If a patient is getting very loud or throwing out profanity, make sure you let them know, in a calm voice, that this will not be allowed here. Once they calm down, you can reenter the room to continue the conversation.

You may need the help of others
Don’t be afraid to ask for the outside help of a professional. They are trained in this area and can be a great resource to help you, and the patient, get through this. Remember to handle it very carefully so they know you will still be by their side.

Patients come to nurses with all types of mental and physical challenges. And, each patient deserves the best care you can provide. Following some of the guidelines above can help you get through these tougher times while you continue to provide the best care possible for your patients.

What happens when my mother insists I be the one to help?

Accepting help from a stranger can be hard for your loved one to accept, and initially, it will be important for you to be present. This will help them to establish a solid relationship and give you the opportunity to show the nurse how you do things so that it still feels familiar, and most of all, comfortable.

Continue to let your mom, or loved one, know that YOU are the one that actually needs help and that by working together, they are helping you, to help them. This goes a long way when it comes to abandonment issues and gives a positive signal for all concerned.

Many times the response from your loved one will be, “I don’t need any help.”. If they know that by accepting help, you will feel much more comfortable knowing someone is there a part of the day, it will make them feel more empowered.

When performing your due diligence to find an in-home caregiver, ask your loved one if they prefer a male or female. However, be open to the experienced guidance of the home healthcare agency as there are wonderful nurses from all backgrounds. When set up correctly, the bonds can be very rewarding.

You may need to refer to the nurse as a “housekeeper”. This will be based on the situation and how “stubborn” your loved one may be. Sometimes someone who is there simply to help around the house is easier to accept to give them time to build trust.

Every situation is different and the home healthcare agency you choose will be able to help walk you through the possible scenarios based on their experience.

What Is a Correctional Nurse?

Did you know that the number of individuals in our nation’s correctional facilities and prisons is staggering, and it continues to grow. Despite the reason that they are there in the first place, the millions of detainees still have medical needs, just like every other citizen, and these needs must be met in a timely and professional manner.

While there may be some additional safety risks as a correctional nurse, we find that most professionals find their work to be just as rewarding as someone who may work in a “normal” facility.

The role of a correctional nurse is a nursing professional that cares for and treats inmates and other detainees in correctional facilities and jails. These professionals make the choice to treat and care for the health needs of those who are detained. Their responsibilities range from performing both routine and emergency medical procedures. This work should also be commended as without them, those who are detained would need to be transported to a public facility for treatment.

Becoming a correctional nurse isn’t for everyone as they truly need to be objective and treat all individuals with respect, no matter the reason they have been detained in the first place. And, it’s important to be compassionate because no one knows what brought them to where they are now. They all have a story to tell, and come from very diverse backgrounds.

Correctional nurses must also be aware of and somewhat comfortable with the fact that they are working around criminals. As a correctional nurse, you must be comfortable with the fact that you could possibly be working in close proximity to some of the most dangerous people, including sexual predators and murderers.
That being said, it’s also important for their own security, that they must take certain precautions to ensure the safety of themselves and everyone around them, including the detainees.

What Do Correctional Nurses Do?

Unlike nurses in some other specialties, correctional nurses typically deal with a wide range of medical problems. They administer both routine and emergency medical care, and they treat acute and chronic illnesses, as well as injuries.

Correctional nurses are also responsible for the routine health care of inmates with certain pre-existing medical conditions. This might include illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and seizure disorders. While in custody, detainees can also develop acute or chronic illnesses, ranging from influenza to AIDS, and it is the correctional nurses’ job to care for them. If a detainee is required to take medications, correctional nurses are also required to administer these medications under strict supervision.

At times, prisons and correctional facilities can be very dangerous places, and injuries – unintentional or otherwise – are not at all uncommon. Correctional nurses must be prepared to handle injuries such as stabbings and broken bones. In some instances, such as when a correctional facility healthcare ward is unable to attend to an emergency, a correctional nurse might also be required to accompany patients to outside medical facilities for additional treatment.

Where Do Correctional Nurses Work?

As a correctional nurse, you could be employed by both private and government-run detention centers, as well as temporary holding facilities. The actual workplace could vary from correctional facilities, prisons, and jails. You may even be assigned to juvenile detention centers and so-called boot camps.

How Do I Become a Correctional Nurse?

Before you start your career as a correctional nurse, you must first take the necessary steps to become a licensed nursing professional, such as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN).

After you’ve become licensed, it is recommended that you gain experience in what is considered a normal, less risky environment. Working hands-on in an emergency care setting is also very helpful, but not always required. Having that additional real-life experience will make you better prepared to handle what may be thrown at you as a correctional nurse.

Once you’re hired as a correctional nurse, there will be even more training help you further understand the safety and security. To take it a step further, consider becoming a Certified Correctional Health Professional by passing the certification examination offered by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare.

Are you having a difficult time coming up with ideas to make your life better, healthier, and more profitable?

To follow are some suggestions to make it happen!

Accountability

Many times we fail at our resolutions because day-to-day life simply gets in the way. Be realistic and set goals that aren’t so far out of reach that it will never happen. Write down your goals, and how you intend to get there, so that you see them every day. This exercise will make it easier for you to actually get there. Start small and then continue to build.

Make a promise to yourself that you’ll work towards taking the next step in your career

You may love your job, but… if you want to move up, sometimes your current situation does not have any opportunity in sight. However, if you have future options in your current company, take the time to learn about what it will take to get that promotion. Do you need additional skills? If so, lay out a plan to learn and start working on them when you can. Of course, don’t let it interfere with your current job as you want to continue to shine. Start working on those. Sometimes it’s as easy as talking to your boss to allow him/her to guide you.

Reduce stress

Stress is one of the top reasons people get sick. And, it can reduce your overall happiness. Find an outlet to take your mind off things that cause stress. Is there a new hobby you’ve always wanted to try? Find outlets that will make you feel more calm and centered and incorporate into your daily routine.

Establish and build upon your network

A professional network is one of the biggest assets for your career. Use them as a sounding board, or to open a door for new opportunities. Even though social media may seem like an easy introduction to a vast amount of people, it is also less personal and may not reap you the rewards you’re seeking when it comes to your career.

Set a goal to increase your network and reach out to friends, and friends of friends, to get the ball rolling. Joining professional organizations will also help bridge the gap to meeting new people.

Take risks

Be open to new opportunities. It may be an extra project within your company that puts you on unfamiliar territory, but, you could learn something new while increasing your skillset.

It’s a new year which means a new you. You don’t have to tackle every one of our suggestions, but as long as you’re willing to try new things and remain focused, you will have a full year of success, and most importantly, health and happiness.

Seeking a new job opportunity?

Seeking some adventure but cannot afford to travel to new places? Consider becoming a travel nurse to explore new places, while receiving competitive pay, reimbursement of travel expenses and the flexibility you may be craving.
